Collecting or obsessing?
From beer bottle caps, to flippo's, to Pokémon cards, to comics. I seem to have an urge to collect things. My mom tossed my bottle cap collection which I can't blame her for. But when I left the house to study in Rotterdam and live in Breda, I remembered my Pokémon card collection. I'm glad I called to ask if she could not toss those. Not for the value in money per se but for the nostalgia. I unfortunately don't have a Charizard base set first edition 💸, mine is from the second base set 🤷♂️. I still have them, but they're tucked away. My new collection though, has a prominent place in my Ikea Billy closet. Which actually means my entire Billy closet. 👀

The foundation got laid back when I was little. My dad used to have some Dutch comics. I grew up with a lot of Guust Flater drawn by André Franquin, which is still my favorite comic book artist. But he also had a few US comics. He had a 6 book run of Venom. Antihero and Spider-man archnemesis (which I didn't know anything about at the time). I don't know how he got them, but the run released in 1993, my year of birth. And the covers, especially the #1, #2 and #3 always fascinated me. Probably scared me a bit if I'm completely honest 🙈. As long as I can remember, Venom has been my favorite Marvel character. I now know where that originated.
Besides the Venom comics, I remembered he had some X-Men comics. But the one that stuck with me was X-Men #266 which is the first appearance of Gambit. I'm not sure why but I think it has something to do with the poses, colors and composition. And what do you know? The character's real name is Remy!

So when I wandered into a comic book store in 2017. I asked for Venom, and instantly recognized the covers of the first three books! And that's where it all started. I completed that run and started collecting the storylines that interested me the most (mostly Venom). But the Watchmen storyline was on the top of my list. Getting Watchmen flown over from Australia was ehhh.. costly. And this opened the floodgates to more and bigger purchases. X-Men #266 was the first more expensive book I couldn't resist buying. Like Venom, I instantly recognized the cover. And what can I say, I'm a nostalgic guy! My first books are still some of my favorite books of my collection which has now grown to over a 1000 books…

I also have an Instagram page where I occasionally post a comic book cover with a look at the inside of the book as well. I'm trying to go through my collection this way and showcase some of the cooler books I own.
